Michelin is well known for producing its prestigious guides to restaurants across the globe. But did you know that the esteemed guide dips its toes into hotels too?
To kick off 2026, Michelin has highlighted six of its favourite establishments across the world that it recently added to its hotel guide. It wrote that the six picks are ‘some of the best-executed and special places in the world’ and that the particular setting of each only adds to its excellence.
The special list includes places in Japan, Norway, India, Australia, and, intriguingly, one here in Britain: Dowans Hotel in Aberlour, Scotland.
The boutique hotel set in a Victorian mansion is a perfect retreat for anyone in need of some respite, but it’s especially great for those partial to a tip-top dram of scotch (or two). Being in the heart of whisky county, it’s neighbours with more than 50 distilleries, many of which are just a short stroll away, and its own bar is stocked with hundreds of classic and rare varieties.
The Michelin Guide said: ‘Dowans is a family-run, 16-room treasure in the Speyside region, where Glenfiddich, Glenlivet and many more distill their spirits. The hotel has two charming bars: the MBar, where whiskies are fashioned into cocktails both classic and contemporary, and The Still, home to the hotel’s 750-strong whisky collection featuring some seriously impressive bottles.’
It added: ‘Sip a dram in here when you’re not on never-ending tasting tours throughout the region, and return in time for the afternoon tea service from the hotel’s own in-house baker.’
