People forget that Scotland has more to offer than Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Highlands. If you’ve been looking for something a bit more niche for your next Scottish day-trip, the oft-forgotten city of Perth is calling your name.

The brand new Perth Museum opened last Saturday (March 30), after renovations were finally completed the long-empty City Hall, the new home of the historic collection. Its contents were taken from the former Perth museum and gallery, which remains as an art gallery, to give them the spotlight they deserve.

The £27 million investment went into redesigning the interior and maintaining the historic Edwardian building. The museum’s centrepiece is the ‘Stone of Destiny’, a 700-year-old stone which was used as part of the coronation ceremonies of Scottish monarchs throughout the thirteenth century, before being stolen by the English in 1296. Not cool, guys.

Luckily, the stone is now back to its rightful home and on display for all to see for free. You can also see the museum’s inaugural exhibition titled ‘Unicorn’, which explores ‘the unicorn’s enduring presence throughout history and its role as a symbol of Scotland’s changing heritage and identity.’

Before you ask, yes, there is a cafe, and a gift shop. You can visit the Perth Museum between 10am and 5pm seven days of the week. Discover more about what’s on offer on the official museum website.
