Starting (relatively) quietly before going off like a missile, HBO and Sky TV’s new legal drama is a dark new guilty pleasure that fans of moreish white collar dramas like Industry, Succession and Suits are going to get a massive kick out of.
War is the latest from Lupin and Hijack creator George Kay, and a second season is already confirmed, to add to the eight episodes of the newly streaming season 1.
None of its characters is a shining beacon of righteousness, from its warring divorcees, A-list actress Carla Duval (Sienna Miller) and tech billionaire Morgan Henderson (Dominic West), to their phalanxes of unscrupulous two-grand-an-hour lawyers assembled to help battle it out over alimony and assets. You know the drill: there are no winners, only vengeful losers. Apart from us, satisfied on the sofa at all the legal bloodlust, honeytraps, and assorted tricks and ambushes each one lays for the other.
And all the courtroom, boardroom and bedroom shenanigans come soundtracked by music supervisor Sinead Jenkins’ shapeshifting selection of music cues, from the glam rock of T.Rex to the prog rock of Free and the timeless soul of Otis Redding.
