Suranne Jones is back with a brand-new drama. The Doctor Foster and Vigil star plays the lead role in ITV’s Maryland, a series following two estranged sisters who reunite after their mother dies and unearth a string of (metaphorical) family skeletons.
Jones also produces the show, which also features House of the Dragon’s Eve Best. Mostly set on the Isle of Man, the drama plays out against a backdrop of stunning coastal landscapes. However, as so often happens in TV, it was actually filmed somewhere entirely different.
Where is ‘Maryland’ filmed?
Maryland was filmed in various locations around Ireland. IRL, the house that the sisters discover their mother in sits on the Howth peninsula, not far east of Dublin.
Anne-Marie O’Connor, co-creator of the show, told The Radio Times that she feels a kinship with the country: ‘I lived in Ireland for a time. I went to university in Galway for a year, all my family are from Tipperary. My writing career started there; I wrote two novels in Ireland when I was younger.’
‘So yes, I love Ireland, although I was really disappointed not to be able to use the Isle of Man. I would have loved to film there. There’s a real specificity to the island. But I think we’ve done a really good job of selling the Isle of Man with Ireland and the locations that we found.’
Who’s in the ‘Maryland’ cast?
Starring alongside Jones and Best as sisters Becca and Rosaline are George Costigan (Happy Valley), who plays the sisters’ father, and Stockard Channing (Rizzo from Grease), who plays Cathy, another resident on the island.
The cast also includes Dean Lennox Kelly (Shameless), Andrew Knott (Mammals) and Hugh Quarshie (Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace).
How many episodes will there be?
There are just three one-hour long episodes.
When does it air?
Maryland began last night (Monday, May 22) on ITV1. Episode two will be aired on Tuesday, May 23, with the final episode on Wednesday, May 24. Both start at 9pm.
