Across the three summers that York Museum Gardens has been hosting live music gigs, it’s welcomed the likes of Elbow, Self Esteem, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Nile Rogers and Pete Doherty. The Live at York Museum Gardens series has proved to be a crucial source of income for the attraction and next summer, it’s set to be even bigger.
Earlier this month, Futuresound Events Ltd was granted permission to host more music events at Museum Gardens in 2027. Though the initial application sought permission for 12 days, City of York councillors gave the green light for six days of events at the gardens in 2027. That’s on top of the existing four days.
Those who back the extra days say that they will generate vital income and that events already held there have boosted the city’s national profile. Kathryn Blacker of York Museums Trust told the hearing that the organisation ‘simply can’t do without it’.
However, locals and some council officials have expressed concerns over noise pollution. In the hearing, one resident argued: ‘The site’s more or less bubbling over with noise. It’s like a sponge cake that’s being baked in a tin that’s too small. There’s also a hum from a drinks cooler that was constantly on all last week and at night.’ North Yorkshire Police issued an objection but withdrew it after Futuresound agreed to cut the proposed number of days in half.
The approved events will take place on consecutive weekends throughout June and July starting next year. Organisers have assured the council and nearby residents that the events would be monitored and would have security staff and stewards on site with sound checks limited to set hours.
