American: The Bill Hicks Story

Time Out says

3 out of 5 stars

Give this docu-portrait credit for taking on the life and artistic development of the relentless late-'80s stand-up comic, who died young and underappreciated on American soil. Family and friends narrate this measured lope into Bill Hicks's backstage history, their anecdotes and accompanying rare footage providing fans with insight into their idol. As for the uninitiated, they'll get only a moderately interesting biography, punctuated with awkward, bobbleheaded animations of faces from photos---and without experiencing the breadth of the soothsaying comedian's mad, anarchic spirit at its apex. Hicks is undoubtedly missed, but this attempt to commune with this social critic's spirit falls frustratingly short of his brilliance.
