Annyong Kimchi

Denounced as a fool by his dying grandfather, Matsue belatedly started giving thought to his Korean ancestry. Crazy about movies since childhood, he'd always thought of himself as an all-Japanese movie freak. But when he entered Imamura's film school he began 'coming out' as Korean to friends and classmates. Narrated by his younger sister Masako, Annyong Kimchi (literally, 'Hello, Kimchi') is a charmingly geeky essay on Korean-Japanese identity. It chronicles the history of Matsue's family (originally 'Yu', not Matsue), sketches the political and social issues and documents his first ever visit to South Korea: the self-portrait of a young man as a kimchi-hater.
