Once a slick short film about an insomniac supermarket cashier, this has now been expanded into a slick feature. If Cashback reminds you of a Coldplay video, that’s because its British writer-director knows only from fashion spreads and making pouty rock stars look thoughtful. Art student Ben (Biggerstaff, a dull romantic lead) reels from his recent dumping, his mind wandering in incessant voiceover as the action freezes around him. It’s the kind of camera trick that allows for walking into hanging snowflakes or “observing the female form” (creep alert), but minimal emotional impact.
