Presumably worried about being typecast as James Bond, Daniel Craig plays Joe Scott, a womanizing British hunk who—wait a second. Joe doesn’t work for Her Majesty: He’s a has-been actor having meaningless, cocaine-fueled sex with models at his Malibu beach house. The noirish sequences of the title rely on the machinations of a vamp, Joe’s next-door neighbor (May), whose in-yer-face sexuality leads him astray. While the dialogue is often hackneyed and full of rushed backstory (not enough flashbacks, evidently), the cinematography excels, particularly the chiaroscuro interiors. And flashing back to the 1970s has its advantages: blue eye shadow for boys, and plenty of Roxy Music.
