A weak and wayward parallel plot and a glaring casting mistake derail this otherwise worthwhile attempt to portray a flawed friendship between a lonely ex-soldier, Frank (Eddie Marsan), and a homeless teenager, Lynette (Candese Reid), in east London. While the film’s more intimate scenes are sometimes affecting and nicely played by Marsan and Reid, frequent diversions to visit an apparently unconnected wealthy working mother, Christine (Romola Garai), on the other side of town, and the entry into the film of Lynette’s nasty boyfriend, Danny (Tom Sturridge, totally unsuited to the role), are both baffling and disastrous for any credibility the film seeks to achieve.
