Leap Year (Año Bisiesto)
Winner of the Camera D’Or in Cannes this year, this début from an Aussie expat in Mexico is a provocative study of how sexual need masks deeper psychological issues. Home-working single freelancer Laura (soul-baring Mónica Del Carmen) copes with her isolation via a stream of one-night stands, but she really begins to connect with the brooding Arturo (Gustavo Sanchez Parra) when his penchant for meting out sexual punishment chimes with her facility for taking it. Dangerous waters here, and the film’s certainly confrontational in its depiction of always consensual extremes. The way its minimal storytelling compassionately insinuates its troubled heroine’s underlying pain however, is affecting, effective and stands comparison with Bertolucci’s ‘Last Tango in Paris’.
