Updating the Bard’s tragedy about a power-mad Scot doesn’t necessarily spell disaster (see Throne of Blood), but you have to wonder why Geoffrey Wright decided to move the action to Melbourne’s criminal underworld. Nothing is gained from having his pentameter-spouting gangsters strut and fret about in a modern setting, and unlike fellow Aussie Baz Luhrmann’s Gen Y take on Romeo and Juliet, the concessions to today’s audiences—this time via hyped-up sex and violence—feel like desperate measures. Something weakened this way comes, you could say.
