Man in the Chair

Man in the Chair
A cinephilic juvenile delinquent (Angarano) living in Los Angeles befriends a gruff but lovable octogenarian gaffer (Plummer) who helps him make a short film for a college-scholarship contest. Overdirected and underwritten, this litany of Hallmark Channel tropes and button-pushing sentiment uses Tinseltown treacle to gussy up an otherwise forgettable message movie about humane treatment for the elderly. Dignifying the shenanigans is Christopher Plummer, who savors his role as the cantankerous coot with an infectious glee.
