An account of a happily arranged marriage that goes badly wrong, set against the backdrop of severe economic transitions in post-Soviet Europe and focusing on a brick factory, this b/w video drama is probably not for everyone. But the skid-row budget is employed to convey the grimness and quasi-medieval rituals of life in the new market reality of the East. The final scene, of renegade mother and daughter literally in limbo between earth and sky, is as good an image as any of the region's uncertain future.
