Somewhat shy and naive, young Romek starts work in the costume department of an opera company, where his delusions about art are dashed by gossip, in-fighting, corruption and egomania. The troupe can easily be read as a metaphor for any large institution or country. What's most intriguing is the improvisational approach Kieslowski uses in his first full-length TV drama - mixing actors with real workers, allowing the story to emerge organically from the situations he observes. The ending has a real kick.
