Fox budget meets slender subject, and East uncomfortably meets West. With York as a '60s pop idol (he even sings) tripping to India for sitar lessons, and Tushingham on an unidentified spiritual quest, not even Utpal Dutt's splendid performance as their Western-susceptible guru can prevent Ivory's mockery from nose-diving into caricature, or his favourite theme - of incongruous cultural collisions - from being awkwardly reinforced by his own hybrid style.
