Anchor & Hope
The no-booking policy at this deservedly celebrated gastropub means many would-be diners have to while away time before getting a table. Thankfully, the bar side of the operation works as more than just a waiting room to the adjoining dining space. It’s dark and buzzy, made dimmer still by aubergine walls and a dark wooden floor. The tables are set a little too close together for comfort, especially when the place is packed with waiting diners, but drop in when the foodies aren’t around and it’s all very convivial. The beer choice – Bombardier and Young’s – may not be as fabulous as the retro British food, but you can’t have everything. A shame, too, that the piano by the door never gets played.
