A café where you pay by exercising is coming to London

Thanks to Christmas, we're all broke now – so if you're seriously feeling the pinch, what would you be prepared to do to pay for your lunch? Bang out a few burpees? A few squats perhaps? Conveniently, there's a café popping up in Covent Garden where you can actually pay for your grub with exercise.

Set up by David Lloyd Gyms, the 'Run For Your Bun' café will let diners order whatever they want from a menu in return for a short, ten-minute HIIT session. That might sound like it's no sweat, but you'll be expected to do an intense combo of treadmill sprints, hill climbs on a spin bike, a few reps on a rowing machine and box-jump burpees. In other words, one helluva workout.

Of course, it is January, so if you're feeling like you could use a fitness challenge to kick 2017 off nicely, book a free spot here. Or, you could always pick up a Slim Pret sandwich for a couple of quid instead. Same thing, right?

The 'Run For Your Bun' café on January 11–13, noon–3pm at St Martin’s Courtyard, 3 Slingsby Place, Covent Garden, WC2E 9AB.
