A £90m renovation has improved the Royal Festival Hall (RFH), externally and acoustically. There are three main halls here: the Royal Festival Hall, which holds nearly 3,000 seats and counts the Philharmonia and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment as residents; the Queen Elizabeth Hall, which has room for around 900 concertgoers; and the 365-capacity Purcell Room, about one-third the size of the QEH and the scene for regular recitals. Programming is rich in variety; the same is true of the foyer stage, which hosts hundreds of free concerts every year.
The refurbishment has led to a revival in the dance programme of the cluster of venues collectively known as the Southbank Centre: the mammoth RFH, the medium-sized Queen Elizabeth Hall, the intimate Purcell Room and the riverside terrace. Nicky Molloy has had a couple of years to settle into her role as the head of dance here, so you can expect more progressive programming, often mixing dance and theatre.
