One of the few Greenwich restaurants operating above chain level, Inside is an unassuming spot, plainly decorated apart from changing displays of local art. On a Saturday night, diners ranged from a big family group to couples on dates, all tucking into a reliable menu that occasionally shows flashes of inspiration, as in roast cod with chickpea, chilli and chorizo cassoulet and tomato and smoked paprika coulis. A baked, spiced paneer filo parcel also far exceeded expectations of a vegetarian main course.
Simple works well too – an adjoining table seemed happy with a textbook grilled ribeye with big chips, roast garlic mayo and rocket salad. Starters contain a similar mix of safe (risotto, goat’s cheese salad) and adventurous (five-spice chicken, coconut and coriander spring rolls with dipping sauce); best was a flavoursome carrot soup.
The generous cheese plate would be our choice to finish, but the sweet-toothed will enjoy warm chocolate fudge cake with vanilla ice-cream and cinnamon tuile. Professional, if eager, service comes with a smile. The drinks list has something for everyone, from locally brewed Meantime pale ale to a delicate provençal rosé. Chef-proprietor Guy Awford also runs the nearby Guildford Arms pub and dining room.
