Kettner’s has long had an air of nostalgia about it, having been through several incarnations in its long history. When it was a posh version of Pizza Express, it exuded a tatty, faded glamour. Reborn as a brasserie, the shabbiness was replaced by swish decor redolent of the restaurant’s 1930s heyday, with palms, mirrors and a somewhat glitzy champagne bar. The place has a definite buzz, but it seems to be more about the setting (and the closely packed tables) than the food. The menu features tried-and-tested classics – the likes of beef carpaccio, oysters and smoked salmon to start, with coq au vin, beef bourgignon and steaks to follow – with the occasional more modish dish, such as belly pork. We tried a small, rather bland piece of pollock on a bed of overcooked cabbage, and a succulent steak, cooked rare as requested, though served with a rather bijou salad. Puddings shone, however – a mango crème brûlée was a dense delight. Overall, though, we would have liked cooking with a bit more gusto, and generosity: £16.50 seemed a lot to pay for a small piece of fish, however chi-chi the surroundings.

Had Sunday Lunch with my mother last weekend. She used to frequent Kettner's in the past, but has not been for about 10 years. We were both impressed with all aspects of the restaurant. We asked about the events rooms, just to be be nosey, and were given a tour of the private rooms upstairs, which also looked wonderful. Looks like we may be back, if not for sunday lunch, but for her next birthday in one of the private dining rooms.

A group of us went to Kettners yesterday for Sunday Lunch, and ate off the set menu, which one must say is fantastic value. The food was very good, as was the service. The brasserie had a great atmosphere helped by the fact it was almost full, perhaps a pianist may be good or some form of live entertainment. Will be back!!

I use kettners for dinner when in London. I must have been at least 20 times last year, and have only positive words to say. As I would say I am a local, I have never written a review, but feel after writing a poor review on another restaurant, I should recognise restaurants that make it seem easy!!

I went to Kettner's last night with 2 friends and it was lovely. We hadn't reserved a table and were seated in half an hour which is incredible on a Thursday night at 8pm. The barman made up some cucumber martinis for us whilst we waited which were delicious. The service was excellent and the fish cakes were sublime. I was a big fan of the ladies loos, good lighting and lots of seating! Definitely will be going again.
