Pimlico has clearly taken to the new-style Orange. The revamped pub has a bar, some outdoor tables and a dining room (plus a few B&B rooms), all tastefully and unfussily done out, and packed on a Saturday night.
The menu is a happy blend of new and familiar, and apart from tiny quibbles - too much red onion in an otherwise finger-licking roast chicken and green bean salad with tarragon and garlic dressing; a so-so baked cheesecake with roast peach and basil anglaise - it works beautifully.
A zingy starter of fried squid, prawns, artichoke and lemon was lifted by the tempura lemon; a generous portion of tuna carpaccio with violet artichokes and fried capers had carefully nuanced layers of flavour. Next, slow-cooked veal shin, soft polenta and radicchio was comfort food heaven, while crab, chilli and lime mascarpone pizza sounded like it shouldn't have worked, but did. Puddings are pricey (mostly £7), but in the case of a superb coffee brûlée with peanut biscuits and caramel ice-cream, totally justified.
A short global wine list and a few real ales (Harveys Sussex Best, Adnams) is supplemented by a short cocktail list - we were taken with the Basil Fawlty (Belvedere vodka, apple juice, passionfruit and own-made basil syrup). Intelligent staff keep the whole operation zipping along nicely.

Ican definately recommend this pleace for dinner or just drinks as well.
We went here recently on a Saturday afternoon - the food was great but the manager ruined it. We had one really great bottle of red and then another of the exact same type which was corked- instead of just accepting it and taking it back as any professional place would he argued with us. My friends didn't want to make a scene so we left it. We were then told repeartedly by him and the waiter that we needed to move downstairs to give up the table up for a bunch of non existent people (the upsairs was completely empty)- despite the fact we said we were goign to be leaving way before they needed us to. One reminder would have been enough. When we said we would move earlier to make them happy, were then told we couldn't move to one of the tables downstairs as that was reserved for 'dinners'- despite the fact we had just spent £400 on food+ wine. Shame this ruined what was otherwise a great meal.
The Orange is an all round fantastic pub! The food, the atmosphere and staff simply get better and better everytime we go!
All our staff had a fantastic time when we visited The Orange for our Summer party, the food was gorgeous and the service and surroundings equally so – a good time was had by all.
