Though not everyone is a fan of the recent redevelopment of Spitalfields (particularly those pushed out by the rising rents), the market has been afforded a new lease of life. The East End stalwart now comprises the refurbished 1887 covered market and the adjacent modern shopping precinct. Around the edge of Old Spitalfields Market, enthusiastic stallholders sell grub alongside big hitters Leon, Canteen and Giraffe while Old Spitalfields itself is now playing host to The Real Greek among other (arguably irksome) chain restaurants. Sundays, particularly during the festive season, are busiest (withdraw money before you arrive or you face a long, and often fruitless, cash machine queue), though the market is now open on Saturdays, relieving some of the pressure. Browsing options include creations by up-and-coming designers, vintage clobber, crafts, jewellery, books, sheepskin rugs and Brazilian flip flops. Thursdays are dedicated to antiques and vintage, Fridays to fashion and art.
