Celebrating its 35th birthday in 2011, this infamous temple to indie music has never looked more upbeat, its new-found impetus provided by its venture east in August 2007.
Owner's Stephen Godfroy, Pete Donne and Nigel House's Rough Trade East's truly inspiring 5,000sq ft loft-style store, café and gig space offers aural beats and treats for Shoreditch's scenesters. The café sells smoothies, sarnies and beer, and rock portraits are hung around the seating area, while nu-psychedelic pop often floats out of the speakers. Both the vinyl and CD collections are dizzying in their range, spanning punk, hardcore, American and British indie, reggae, dub, funk, soul, post punk and new wave, with a large row of dance 12-inches, the highlight of which is the 'bastard pop' mash-up section. With 16 listening posts and a stage for live sets you cannot get much closer to music nirvana.
