The oldest house in east London, red-brick Sutton House is owned by the National Trust and was built in 1535 for Henry VIII's first secretary of state, Sir Ralph Sadleir. New beautfully restored in authentic original decor, with a real Tudor kitchen to boot, Sutton House also boasts Jacobean and Georgian interiors are on show, as well as an Edwardian chapel, medieval foundations in the cellar and 1980s graffiti under the roof. Sutton House also boasts possibly London's oldest loo - a 16th-century garderobe, which was boarded up in the 1700s. Note that the house closes for January each year.
