1020 Bar
Embalm yourself with cheap beer (nine on tap include Brooklyn Lager and Widmar Brothers Hefeweizen) and a solid collection of the hard stuff at this Upper West Side watering hole, formerly a barbershop and a funeral home. The spot caters to locals: You’ll find about a half-dozen booths packed with neighborhood regulars, and a smattering of Columbia coeds. Sepia-toned murals and antique barber chairs are nods to 1020’s former incarnation (though there’s not a casket to be found).

Oh, 1020… You legend of a bar. Popular (infamous?) with the Columbia/Barnard crowd uptown, I grew very well acquainted with their $2 Yuengling happy hours. During the day, grad students post up in booths for pint while they work. As day transitions to night, the place gets packed with undergrads – I strongly recommend avoiding the spot anytime after 10pm on a weekend night. But overall, a fun college dive bar that holds many fond memories for myself and my friends. There’s a pool table, darts, and always, always a completely bizarre movie playing with no sound, projected on the back wall. Their Tuesday Trivia Nights are on my NYC bucket list.

Classic NY dive bar full with Columbia students. Big shout to Tim the barman, thanks for the great hospitality!
