The conceit of this saloon may seem a bit tired: Yes, it's another hidden Prohibition-style speakeasy, this one showcasing a copper bathtub at its center. But the drinks list was created by fresh talent on New York's cocktail circuit—mixologist Sean Muldoon of Belfast, Ireland's lauded Merchant Hotel bar. Choose from his creations, like the West Side (gin, sherry, St. Germain, cucumber, basil) and the Jazz Age (rum, pampelmousse rose, cherry liqueur, grapefruit). To eat, find comfort-food small plates, such as fried oysters or pork belly sliders.

I had great expectations for this bar having heard about it from a few people and picked it out of the Lonely Planet guide (we were in NYC for a week). Sadly it did not meet our expectations. We eagerly waited out front of the unassuming coffee shop before being ushered through a wall into the hidden bar. First impressions were great, it ticked the boxes for a speakeasy, hidden entrance, dim lighting, 20s style decor and delicious cocktails. Sadly our enthusiasm stopped there, these guys have got the vibes so wrong. Belting Nicki Minaj out of the speakers and piling 'em in high seems to have attracted cocky, bolshy, affluent youngsters (I'm 28 and I felt old). I love a speakeasy and I was really looking forward to visiting one in their birthplace, but am sad to say it completely lacked the style and class of those I have visited in London, Sydney and Melbourne (I'm sure there are better ones in NYC). If I'm paying a premium for a cocktail, I want to sip and enjoy it, rather than be pushed and shoved around like I'm in a nightclub. Tip to the owners: sack off the chart music, make it seated only, and work on the floor staff's customer service skills. On a positive note, keep up the work on the cocktails, they really are great.

Well hidden speakeasy only given away by the small queue outside the coffee shop. Great atmosphere and selection of cocktails. Definitely worth a visit.
