Jake's Dilemma

This gritty pub on the UWS actually poses two dilemmas: what game to play, and which beer to drink? There’s foosball, a pool table and two video games (including Big Buck Hunter), plus more than 40 beers (16 on tap include microbrews such as Fire Rock Pale Ale, $6 for a pint). DJs spin Wednesday through Saturday nights, but those seeking (relative) peace can retreat to one of two quieter rooms.

Jake's Dilemma tends to get a little bro-y and unmanageable during peak (happy) hours, but as long as you're prepared for that you'll be fine. I've gone in a couple times with that in mind, however, and found the noise level absolutely ridiculous (like unable-to-hold-a-conversation-with-the-person-sitting-beside-me level). But other times we've relished in it (mostly when we show up already wasted and get in on a game of beer pong). Like prev reviewer noted, there are drink specials almost every night, because Jake's belongs to the same family as legendary shitshow venues like 13th Step, Stumble Inn, etc. So that being said, it's great for what it is, but not my first choice for bars on the UWS.

This is the typical "fratty" bar of the Upper West Side. It's part of the same company as 13th Step (East Village), Stumble Inn (UES), The Gin Mill (down the street in UWS) and several others, which means there are plenty of specials nearly every night. The staff is very friendly and it has a private party room downstairs. There are also beer pong tables, which means beer pitchers, which is always a plus. The bouncers that are inside the bar are key in making sure everyone follows the pong rules (no more assholes forcing newcomers to buy drinks because they won the last round...). It's definitely always fun here!
