Friendly bartenders, spacious booths and old-school diversions like Big Buck Safari telegraph a homey vibe at this welcoming bar tucked away in the dead zone between Park Slope and Sunset Park. But don’t let the effortless feel fool you: South is serious about its booze selection, with nearly 50 American and Euro beers by the bottle (try the Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse, a silky German wheat beer) and a well-rounded collection of whiskey. Smokers favor the patio, while at the bar, low-key jocks commandeer stools with clear sight lines to the football-tuned TV. Bolstering the neighborhood vibe: cheap happy hour specials (everything is a buck off daily from 6 to 9pm) and unfussy food like beef jerky.
