It's hard not to agree with almost anything that comes out of Neil deGrasse Tyson's mouth, especially since he always sounds so...intelligencical and elocutionistic or whatever. I mean, how many other astrophysicists that aren't Stephen Hawking can you name?? Even Hawking never had Key & Peele parody him—and honestly, they should probably keep it that way. So if Mr. deGrasse Tyson tells us that there exists a day where the setting sun perfectly aligns with Manhattan's east-west street grid and that we shall call it "Manhattanhenge" then people...THAT IS WHAT WE DO. There are actually 4 per year—2 "full sun on the grid" and 2 "half sun"—and one of each is left. Monday July 11 at 8:20pm is a "full" (the better of the two), with a "half" on July 12 at 8:20pm as a fail safe.
The event proves to be a boon not only for residents, science nerds and fans of pretty things, but also Instagrammers! If you can jockey your way to a good view, one free of other smartphones, then we may even include your picture in our annual M-henge pic roundup. And according to NdGT, the best cross streets to shoot on are 14th, 34th, 42nd and 57th, as they’re the widest and have some interesting buildings too. (Seriously, is there anything that this guy doesn't know??) We guarantee these will be the rare sequels that are just as good as the originals..
