R.I.P. Saturday morning cartoons

Gather around, bow your heads, and let us have a moment of silence for the death of Saturday morning cartoons. This past weekend was the first time since the 1950s that cartoons were not a part of a major network's programming; the CW was the last network to drop them from their schedule. The last block of cartoons aired included Sonic X, Dragon Ball Z and Yu-Gi-Oh! Cartoon lineups have been dying since the 90s, due to failing health (ratings) over the past few decades. (It’s all about this thing called Netflix now, folks.) We currently have access to shows on demand, all those fancy apps, and basically everything we couldn’t even fathom in our youth (we must carry on, cartoons would want us to be happy). And while this technology stuff rocks, it was the final nail in the coffin for Saturday morning cartoons.

Most of us have fond memories of sitting in front of the TV on Saturday morning, eating a sugary cereal delight, watching our favorite show. Although future generations won’t get the chance to know cartoons like we did, they will get to hear the tales of those TV days of yore, or at least we'll try to tell them while they're ignoring us while playing Xbox. And if you want a way to continue watching your cartoons, adults can pay their respects and get their fix at Nitehawk Cinema’s monthly Spoons, Toons & Booze or at Videology’s weekly Cocktails, Comics and Cartoons. Saturday morning cartoons are survived by shows like Dexter’s Laboratory, Adventure Time and The Magic School Bus, which stream on Netflix.
