A consistently admirable ensemble of skillful players mostly in their teens, the New York Youth Symphony opens its 50th-anniversary season with a gala performance marking the Carnegie Hall debut of its new music director, Joshua Gersen. Violinists Cho-Liang Lin, Michelle Kim, Samuel Katz and Alice Ivy-Pemberton are featured in Ludwig Wilhelm Maurer's Sinfonia Concertante, surrounded by Shostakovich's Festive Overture, Dvorak's "New World" Symphony and a premiere by Gabriel Zucker.
