Six years and innumerable superstar spinners later—the likes of Derrick Carter and Frankie Knuckles regularly stop by—Sleepy & Boo's Basic NYC bash, held on Saturdays at Sullivan Room, is still one of NYC's premier parties for high-grade dance music. But the secret to the night's success is its low-key, totally unpretentious vibe; it's more like a gathering of old (and new) pals than the typical, every-man-for-himself club night. Dance-music deity Franois K has been a huge influence on the scene since the disco days. Here, he spins his exquisite sets of underground rhythms each and every Monday night for one of the city's most intimate dance floors. If techno is now one of the biggest sounds in New York nightlife (and it is), you have Bryan Kasenic aka DJ Spinoza to thank. He kicked off the Bunker back in 2003, a time when serious techno was nearly nonexistent in Gotham. Clubland was once the realm of society's outsiders, where after-dark freaks of all manner could feel at home.
