Babs’s directorial debut has all the earmarks of ersatz, high-gloss Hollywood prestige—as well as 12 musical numbers (partly composed by Michel Legrand) for schmaltz-hounds. But there’s no getting around the fact that she simply can’t pass for a young girl masquerading as a male yeshiva student, or even a young Barry Manilow.
