Azar Lawrence Quartet

Critics' pick
Saxophonist Azar Lawrence made a splash in the early-to-mid-’70s with Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner and others, but faded from view during the ensuing three decades. Lawrence has been back on the NYC scene in recent years, playing the kind of fiery, Coltrane-inspired postbop he excelled at as a hungry young tenor ace. Here, he pays tribute to the Trane landmark A Love Supreme, recorded exactly 50 years ago, with help from former Coltrane sideman Reggie Workman on bass, Benito Gonzalez on piano, and either Jeff "Tain" Watts or Brandon Lewis (who fills in for the 10pm set on Dec 10).
