A bassist and composer who cut his teeth in woolly Greenwich Village tussles with free-jazz firebrand Albert Ayler, then flourished in the bands of pianists Paul Bley and Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock turns up here as half of an enchanting duo with pianist Marilyn Crispell. As heard on a new ECM CD, Azure, the pair's repertoire ranges from openhearted balladry to pointillist improvisation.
