Holter is an unpigeonhole-able artist who combines the avant-gardism of a cutting-edge composer with the emotional resonance of an intimate singer-songwriter. Here, she presents a special ambitious staging of her 2011 album, Tragedy. One for intertextual interpretation—see 2013's French novella-inspired album, Loud City Song—Holter uses this production to re-imagine Euripedes' ancient greek play, Hippolytus, through opera. At times, heartbreakingly poignant and at others, airily whimsical, the lush music conjures new meaning from ancient themes.
