Michael Blake is one of the local scene's gifted eclectics, a brash saxophonist who pens compositions that veer sinuously from straight-ahead jazz to the more off-kilter variety, with meaningful perambulations through Vietnamese and African styles. His charming latest disc, Tiddy Boom, draws on comfy ’60s-style hardbop—a reasonable indicator of what to expect from this set with pianist Frank Kimbrough, bassist Ben Allison and drummer Rudy Royston.
