I was excited to try Butter Midtown, based on Iron Chef Alex Guarnaschelli, how much I enjoyed Butter when it was (further) downtown, and generally just trying her take on New American cuisine. The space is giant - which I think is good and bad. It is a lot to take in, and beautifully designed, but I think it loses some intimacy and exclusivity. Additionally, it meant the service staff had to cover more space, and even though it wasn't a problem, I felt it could be - you may be left waiting/ don't expect to be done quickly. I tried the crostini, the pork shank, and the chocolate cake - the food itself was really good, maybe a little too complex - the taste profile was there, but I felt for a lot of dishes the same or better effect could have been created without all the ingredients. Additionally, for me at least the plates, flatware, etc. were kind of cutesy and charming, but clashed with the more contemporary aesthetic of the restaurant. Overall it was a nice experience, and I enjoyed it - I may have walked in with high expectations.
