Columbia students can sate their dumpling cravings at this tiny eatery, whose cherrywood floors and brick walls dress up its cheap-eats mission. The purses come with mostly classic fillings like pork-and-chive, though a few original versions—such as “ugly” dumplings, buns stuffed with veggies and vermicelli—are also available.

Thank goodness for East. East is the only decent hand-made dumpling house on the UWS. Ollie's dumplings don't even compare. They're too doughy and microscopic, and expensive. East's crucially are hand made, sizable, tasty. They have some traditional flavors, like the pork with cabbage (what most American's think of as "Chinese dumplings") and the pork with garlic chives. They also have some nouvelle dumplings, like the chicken and basil and shitake mushrooms. My husband likes corn and so also likes the corn dumplings. My favorite is the pork and shrimp. Cost is VERY REASONABLE. Service is kindly. Atmosphere is nicely decorated (not cheesy) and clean. Ollies uses huge amounts of environmentally horrid plastics and take-out containers even for eat-in dining (in the 80s). East has real plates and is quite nicely presented. They serve several other dishes if you don't like dumplings and there is a vegetarian variety. Best of all, you can get 50 frozen cook-them-yourself dumplings for $20. This is a great place to come. I go here often. Love it!
