Fairway - Red Hook
Steer your brood to the back of this Red Hook market and you'll find an affordable sandwich shop. Outside, a sublime patio opens onto the New York Harbor—keep an eye out for the Staten Island Ferry in the distance. The kids can feast on gooey grilled cheese, but you should try the $10 lobster roll: It's a perfect tribute to a fine sea view.

This is a great destination marketplace for Brooklynites.  You can spend the day in Rod Hook enjoying the great outdoor spaces and up-and-coming restaurant scene and grocery shop before heading home.  Of course you'll need a vehicle of sorts, as the nearest subway is quite a trek.  The parking lot can get a bit crowded so carpool when possible.  The selection of groceries and fresh produce is incredible.  Prices are on the high side but bargains can be found.  Think of this place as a slightly less expensive Whole Foods with a bit warmer and more charming personality and local feel. (Fairway is actually a chain.)  Besides the produce, I enjoy the pickle and cheese selection, fresh fill-it-yourself bags of granola and the olive oil and vinegar room (tasting bread provided, though not frequently replenished).  It can be a little confusing to navigate and crowded at times but it's still one of my favorite supermarkets.
