Step into the narrow front room of El Portal and you’ll likely see an empty space with a few regulars at the bar. Keep walking and you’ll hit the back patio, with a Plexiglas roof, lovingly potted plants, and colored chairs and wood tables from Puebla, Mexico. While the food doesn’t aim high, it’s good and cheap enough to warrant repeat visits. Entrées generally stick to the classics, but there are also lesser-known treats like chilaquiles, a hearty platter of steak pounded thin and served with freshly made corn tortillas with a red chili sauce, black beans and avocado. For dessert, order a melon margarita.
