I just went to Max last night in Williamsburg and it’s as good as everyone says it is. The space is small, but spacious (the super high ceilings lend to this air) and nicely designed. It feels very Brooklyn, but not over-done. The menu is standard Italian fare. There are lots of dishes with tomato sauce, basil and cheese that all sounded great, but I opted for the meatloaf which was fantastic. Starters are well-done versions of the basics. The bread and olives is made all the better by the “Max sauce” which is basically an olive tapenade. Great starter to share if you want to start your carbs with carbs. Highly recommended for an inexpensive, delicious meal!
Delicious genuine Italian food at very affordable prices (where else can you find superb pasta at $12?) in a friendly and cool environment. My husband and I had dinner Saturday night and we loved everything: the appetizers – Tuscan bruschetta and zucchini scapece -, the pasta – Sicilian rigatoni with eggplants, black linguine with shrimps -, and the desserts – panna cotta and crème brulee -. The venue is cozy: recycled wood on the walls like an art installation and recycled chairs from a nearby school are a special touch.
I have been to Max in Brooklyn , twice in the last week. I have had the pasta with eggplant - alla siciliana, rigatoni with meat sauce and the lightly fried chicken cutlet. The pasta with eggplant is an excellent vegetarian option. The rigatoni with the meat (beef) sauce followed up by a chicken cutlet may be the PERFECT meal - it also reminds me of my Sunday dinners in southern Italy. Max's meat sauce is the right combination of savory and sweet (you can see the carrots in the sauce). The pasta was cooked al dente, The breaded lightly fried chicken cutlet was light and a great follow-up to the rigatoni with meat sauce. It is very obvious that the food is made with care from top ingredients. At any price, it is a fantastic meal, let alone the reasonable prices charged. The staff is friendly and the room is cozy and clean. I will be back soon again, to try the lamb ragu. Btw, the coffee is top notch, both espresso and regular brewed.
