Description
The speakeasy-fication of New York continues with this Prohibition-inspired restaurant from the folks behind Punch and Judy and PS 450. Named after Andrew Volstead, the congressman associated with the booze ban, the spot’s menu features non–Roaring ’20s–esque drinks (see the cantaloupe daiquiri) and eats (saffron shrimp).

  $8 beers / $15 cocktails. Volstead has a nice front but inside is drab with a lackluster atmosphere and rude staff. Unfortunately, with the new remodeling, Volstead tries too hard to be trendy and ends up lame. Target clientele was supposed to be younger but misses the mark, in this and in so many other ways. The problem is there are too many other good places to go that truly are fun that Volstead is just a pail imitation of its better neighbors.
