The food is very, you know…steak frites, brandade de morue (salt-cod-and-potato puree) and the like. The portion sizes and the breadth of beer offerings, however, are distinctly Yankee-Doodle in their generosity. Satisfying slabs of foie gras terrine are served with toast; steak au poivre weighs in at a hefty ten ounces—and that’s not counting the brittle double-fried frites. As you listen to Larry Adler’s harmonica rendition of “I Love Paris” segue into Charles Trenet’s “La Mer,” you may wonder what’s playing at Le Grand Rex tonight.

For a fortifying bite before a Broadway show, I would recommend this French bistro, a short stroll from most of the major theaters. The steak frite is standard but satisfying. The lamb with basil mashed potatoes is savory and filling. The wine selection is good (not brilliant but it serves) and all in all the service is efficient. (They tend to attract tourists, so you have to expect a soupçon of sardonic detachment from the waitstaff. Or that’s just part of the French vibe.) It’s a big place, but they manage to get you in and out before curtain. Certainly there are bistros in this town with better food (Chat Noir) or better atmosphere (L’Express) but Pigalle maintains decent standards while being highly convenient for the regular attendee of plays and musicals. Just don’t take your votre amis Français.
