It used to be, the only time you heard New Yorkers mutter words like cleanse and raw, it was after a rough Friday night. But juice diets and caveman cuisine are increasingly part of the average Gothamite's diet, as evidenced by the opening of Hu Kitchen, a bi-level Union Square market dedicated to "pre-industrial and pre-agrarian" fare. Founded by health-conscious siblings Jordan Brown and Jessica Karp (who formerly worked in real estate and finance, respectively), the market features various sections serving prepared and fresh foods: a yogurt bar with four types of house-made granola and almond and cashew butters; a cold-press juice bar where you can grab a carrot-apple-ginger bottle to go; and a made-to-order counter, offering rotisserie chickens coated with coconut sugar and kale salad with goji berries. Munch on your antioxidant-rich meal upstairs, where the tables are made from cross-sections of Indonesian trees, and a balcony affords a view of the bustling square.

Due to its extremely convenient location (situated right on the corner of 14th and 5th Ave), Hu Kitchen has helped me out of many a bind with their extensive options for quick, healthy meals. I’ve never dined-in, instead picking up snacks and small dinners in between a hectic schedule of activities. I really love their bowl options: I always go for the quinoa bowl with organic Moroccan chicken. Their green juices are solid and their paleo blondies are to die for. Ultimately, while I appreciate their options for truly healthy food on the go, Hu’s prices are downright usurious and I can’t justify eating here regularly. They do offer a 10% student discount, but it barely makes a dent in the final bill.

My husband heard about Hu Kitchen through his buddies at the gym – specifically about their crack coffee (which is made with Irish butter and coconut oil). He was instantly hooked. We eventually went to try out the food. I will admit, they do a pretty good job making insanely healthy food taste very yummy. I usually get their entrée plus one side (Grandmaster Veg lasagna and root vegetable mash) and have tried their wild shroom salad (so delicious!). The things that makes me wary of coming here too much are the prices. My small box of mushroom salad came out to a whopping $17. Still, if you’re in a bind and want quality healthy well-prepared food, this will be the place to stop by.
