Arsene Lupin vs Sherlock Holmes

I went to see Arsene Lupin vs. Sherlock Holmes at the Gene Frankel Theater on Bond Street last night. Arsene Lupin vs. Sherlock Holmes is billed as a comedy, as a comedy it has a few laughs and some chuckles. The problem is that the acting is very good by off off Broadway standards, but the script is weak. Another problem is the French accents, Lisa Monde has it nailed,I suspect that she speaks French, but some of the others sounded Brooklyn French. I think that

if the play was done without the accents it would have been less distracting and possibly funnier.

In my opinion the best acting was done by Lisa Monde as Raffles, daughter of Holmes, Tracilyn Jones, friend and sometime accomplice of Lupin the thief, and Kevin Sebastian, as Lupim. Philip O’Gorman as Holms was also did well. The rest of the cast within their experience, burdened by the French accent, and a weak script, were not without their moments, but did on occasion chew up the scenery at times.

Do not get me wrong, this is off off Broadway, a bargain in the theater world. I was entertained and amused for less than the cost of a movie. The actors were mere feet away which allows you to be much more immersed in the play, and some of these off off Broadway productions make it to off Broadway, a few all the way to Broadway. You may see an actor who years later will allow you to say “I say them early on”.

If you love the theater and have the time, going to see as many of these embryonic productions is great investment in the “Theater”

Go see this production, make up your mind. If you are eligible, TDF.org has tickets, otherwise call the theater.

My non-profit rented this theatre for over two years. Gail Thacker, the proprietor, is hands-down the worst person I've dealt with in business. She was constantly double-booking the space, breaking the contract we had set out and flat out lying. We were able to find a new space with a more honest landlord in October of 2014. As of December 4, 2015, we still have not received our $500 deposit back because of Gail's financial incompetence. That was written in a previous yelp post as well (that I didn't see until now). I have consistently poked and prodded her over these 14 months to return our deposit, to no avail. So, unless you want to kiss your deposit goodbye even though you leave the space in perfect condition, I would avoid renting this space at all costs.
