In celebration of our 1,000th issue, we’re seeing how much the city has changed since our first edition nearly two decades ago

It was in the long ago year of 1995 that we first launched Time Out New York, and if you look around you, you might notice that the city’s changed just a bit since then (apart from the rats on the subway, of course—they’re not going anywhere). In those two decades, neighborhoods have risen and fallen, fashions have come and gone, restaurants have opened and closed and opened again, but through it all has stood our city: loud, gritty and crazy but still beautiful, resilient and, most importantly, ours. Take a look below at what’s changed in the course of 20 years, including Times Square, the South Street Seaport, CBGB and more.
