The work by the artists in this show departs somewhat from the usual anime-dominated aesthetic that defines contemporary Japanese art. Pop-culture references remain, but they are joined by allusions to Ukiyo-e prints, Medieval Buddhist painting and other aspects of traditional Japanese art and craft—all mixed with a granular focus on detail to create fantastical images that bring together past, present and future.
