Along via Casilina, just inside the GRA ring road, is the anonymously ugly suburb of Tor Tre Teste, above which emerges the startling Dio Padre Misericordioso church, designed by American architect Richard Meier. Its three white sails make it look like a mini version of the Sydney Opera House. It stands in splendid isolation, in a sea of asphalt, looking as out of place in this run-down periphery as Meier's Ara Pacis museum does in the centro storico.
